It would be difficult, indeed, to imagine someone who has done more to elevate the reputation of American Wines to "world class" status than Miljenko "Mike" Grgich. It was, of course, Mike's Chateau Montelena Chardonnay that took top honors at the now legendary 1976 Paris Blind Tasting, beating out the heavily favored French entries.

On the strength of that event, the world took a second look at American wines and, along with Austin Hills (Hills Brothers Coffee) Mike was able to to start his own winery, employing a number of wine making techniques that he created.

This dinner will actually be our second celebration of Grgich wines. The first took place fourteen years ago and was hosted by Mike's daughter and business partner, Violet Grgich. This time, the hosting duties fall to Wine Maker, Ivo Jeramaz, Mike's nephew and protege.

In the interests of full disclosure, I should mention that the Grgich family, and my own, share a common heritage. Mike hails from Croatia, as do my parents and you will notice a few acknowledgements of that fact in the menu. But, that's as far as it goes. As always, I am uncompromising when it comes comes to quality and I can assure you, the wines we present, here, are "world class" and great examples of Mike's, Violet's and Ivo's extraordinary talents. Enjoy! and "Zivili!"
